  Cyprus JW's Military Service

  i work with a nurse who served for 2 years in the army of cyprus as is compulsory in that country.

  i happened to ask about jw's and their consequential punishment for not doing it.

  he laughed and stated that since 2009 they have to do it and that he personally knew several that 'served.

  To add to this topic..

  I had a young friend in Italy that left Bethel early, due to having to serve his mandatory military service.

  This was in the early 2000s. Allot may have changed since then.

  At that time, also, you could get married in the hall with out your divorce being final. It took 5 years . [this has changed to 3 years and the 'kind provision' is no more] You just signed a paper witnessed by elders that when your divorce was final you would legally marry. If you didn't , well, you were DFed. for fornication. lol

  That phrase always made me feel unworthy.

  The intent was to never let you feel secure with god. Keep you on the hamster treadmill till you die....I hated it.

  Hated it as much as a spanking from a parent that said 'this hurts me more than it will hurt you'

  So, the Womens March ... What Is It For?

  it seems like mobilizing after the election, which seems pointless.

  i keep hearing demands for equal rights but don't understand what rights they are missing exactly.. normally a march is to show the support (and potential votes) for a cause, but ... votes for what?

  ... and the election happened already.. is anyone else confused?

  which world is this?_________________when the doctor pulled my screaming body out of mom all those 7 decades ago, i landed in a post-wwii world.it was--compared to today's world--an alien planet.. the world i live in today has nothing in common with the world in which i grew up.. there were no cell phones back then--there were black telephones with a dial-tone and an operator who placed your call.

  everywhere you found telephone booths!

  a call was a nickle.where did all those telephone booths go?i dunno.where did my whole world go?i dunno.. tv sets were huge boxes with tubes and small screens.

  So much has changed .

  Cameras without film, I'm still rebelling on that one.

  A good black Royal or Carona typewriter.

  I loved the sound of my mom tap tap tapping out my dads talks late at night. There's a shop in Bazerkley CA were they sell and repair them.

  Hospice and JW

  i am a bereavement coordinator with a hospice company.

  i have noticed that most often jw patients decline chaplain care and also the family ends up declining bereavement care.

  where i work our chaplains do not proselytize at all...they merely walk with the patient in their faith at the end of life.

  I have had hospice help my family twice.

  JW's most likely will be afraid of speaking to an outsider about anything . Not just religion. They are an insular group and depend on each other, and mostly the Elders for support.

  In my situation. Myself having left the group. I found them helpful. During the process and after. I went to a Hospice therapist for almost a year.

  It wasn't just me though. I was able to be a comfort to my leaving loved ones by their advice. I learned to bite my tongue and say loving things to ease my dying loved ones. I said things that calmed their anxiety. Things I no longer believed.

  Yes, sometimes we do that.
  

  My advice is to look for the quit one in the corner. The outsider. The one that isn't quit fitting in. That's were you may do some good.

  It's thoughtful of you to come here and ask.

  i can't even remember what got me interested in pans, probably wanting to try cooking more and watching some cooking videos on youtube, but i kind of started wanting to get a cast-iron skillet specifically so started reading up on them.

  hey, if you're going to spend $50 on something you need to study them and create a comparison spreadsheet ... right?.

  not only did cast-iron look great for cooking but there are some studies that show risks to aluminium / teflon cookware ... not that the wts was "right" about aluminium, but teflon can give off carcinogenic chemicals if overheated (so what if it chips off into your food?).

  The best for a frittata. perfection.

  They are passed down in the Family.

  Ha, they are a better weapon of mass fear than a lightweight aluminum pan. Meow.

  You can find them at garage sales and goodwill sometimes. Usually over cleaned though.

  PS , butter is good for you. Trust me.

  How many JWs still have a personal conscience?

  in conversation with an old jw friend today, it struck me that most jws have replaced their personal conscience with a collective one.. instead of training their own mental powers to distinguish right from wrong, as the bible encourages, they are content to shift personal accountability away from themselves and onto the impersonal org.

  whatever behaviour may prompt an ordinary person to have serious misgivings ( such as ignoring glaring misapplication of scripture or rejecting basic human decency in favour of unchristian shunning ) they prefer to have those decisions made for them.. history teaches us, however, that there is no absolution for people who behave unethically or cruelly by allowing the excuse of 'obeying orders' to override what their inner voice should scream is inherently wrong..

  ' a collective conscience'

  I spent a lot of time thinking about this on my way out.
  

  What I came away with is , you don't develop a 'conscience' if you live by rules.

  Your brain isn't engaged in the same way.
